Internet Marketing

Lessons from Internet Marketing. There exists a class of folks who derive a living out of selling things online. I don't mean brick-and-morter stores with some presence on the web. I mean folks who never take physical possession of products, many of which, like software and ebooks, don't even exist physically.

Frequently, these are affiliate marketers who make large commissions (frequently up to 75%) on the goods they sell, and who have developed very sophisticated methods for assessing a market, choosing or developing a product, and selling it.

Usually the process begins with a concept and a search for keywords. In this case, we are looking for a keyword which gets a decent amount of searches, but does not attract too much competition. When thinking about a "decent amount of searches", consider that the #1 website in search results gets on average 47% of total traffic. The #2 site gets 22% and the #3 site gets 17% of total traffic.

Lets assume that your website might end up in position #7, and might garner only 10% if all traffic. So if you needed 100 visits per day, you would need a keyword which with 1,000 relevant searches per day.

From this you can see that two factors are necessary for success: (1) a keyword which experienced sufficient daily searchs, and (2) a keyword where the search results are not so tough as to prevent you from achieving a decent ranking in search results.

Assuming that you have located such a niche, the best way to achieve the ranking is through content development. Content is used in two ways, to add to your website, and to provide articles and other material which can be posted to article directories and other social media.
